My experience converting from blogger to WordPress

blogger vs. WordPressNovice bloggers such as myself have recently been utilizing blogger to create their first blog as a result of its ease of use and feasibility. While blogger definitely has some advantages such as fast page loads, free hosting, and instant approval from Google adsense many bloggers simply need more. I am now one of them. My entire night was spent switching my blogger blog over to WordPress and I will now share my experiences.

Originally when I started my blogger account I purchased TheTechPerspective.com through Google. Later I felt the need to host some elements of my blogger blog on an external host so I purchased a hosting plan and TechPerspective.com domain name from GoDaddy.com. It was never my intention to leave blogger for WordPress but it was a move that I had to do. After reading several articles about different blogging platforms it was apparent that I would need to switch to WordPress simply for the stability of a paid host. There were also other limitations with blogger that were bothering me.

Now that I have described why I made the switch it is time to describe the headaches in between. My first obstacle was that I had not had TheTechPerspective.com domain name for 60 days. You must wait 60 days before you transfer a domain name so I do not have access to my domain for another 4 days. This is bad because I can not redirect visitors to the new domain. Another problem that I faced was that the import function in WordPress would come up with an error when attempting to transfer my blogger posts. As a result I had to manually transfer them all over.

Currently I am facing two problems. Google has not indexed my new domain yet and I can’t figure out how to change the urls for the posts that I have submitted to Digg. There are a few other things that I am still working on that are not worth mentioning.

After undergoing this process my advice to anyone looking to start a blog would be to go straight to WordPress. Blogger is a very attractive platform since it is free and easy to get going but with a little initial configuration WordPress creates a more automated system of posting.
